New beginnings start with a single step…

The Committee to Aid Abused Women (CAAW), an Organization for Families, provides free, confidential, bilingual services to families in Washoe County, Nevada, as they seek to end the abuse in their lives.

CAAW’s mission, Changing Lives – Ending Family Violence, guides the work of the organization and unites its endeavors.

2012 Hannah Humanitarian Award Luncheon

  • Posted on March 7, 2012 at 10:50 am

Join in CAAW’s annual events, like our springtime Hannah Humanitarian Awards Presentation.

Each Spring, CAAW presents the Hannah Humanitarian Award to Nevadans who are committed to helping women and children in domestic violence situations. The award is named for Hannah Keziah Clapp, one of the most influential women in Nevada’s history. Her efforts to support women and children in Nevada through education and advocacy are nothing short of legendary.

Like Hannah, this year’s recipients, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, Claudia King and the late Omer King, have made a difference in the lives of Nevadans and have worked tirelessly to help victims of family violence.

Please join us in honoring these great humanitarians and supporting victims of domestic violence at the 2012 Hannah Humanitarian Award Luncheon on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 11:30 – 1:30 p.m. at the Atlantis Casio Resort Spa.

Individuals, businesses and organizations can purchase seating at the event, sponsor a portion of the dinner or advertise in the commemorative program.

CAAW’s results speak for themselves, but we think the following messages from our brave survivors speak even louder:

The Voices of Results – CAAW Survivors Who Overcame

“There I stood at the door, beaten up, no self-esteem, (with) two little children. You took me in, opened your door to me and saved me. Thank you.”

HISTORICALLY

The organization began in 1977 and operated the first domestic violence shelter in the State of Nevada from a one-bedroom apartment. Seeing early on that the need was greater than expected, a larger home was purchased and then another and then another. The current shelter has 21 beds for women and children. Plans for an expanded shelter, with nearly 75 beds, are currently under way.
